Lindsey Fleishman

Lindsey FleishmanLindsey Fleishman will follow family tradition while charting her own path as a student at East Carolina University this fall.

Fleishman is one of 20 incoming EC Scholars, the most prestigious undergraduate award program offered at ECU. The four-year merit scholarship recognizes outstanding academic performance, commitment to community engagement and strong leadership skills. Recipients receive an Honors College scholarship and a stipend for study abroad for a total value of nearly $64,000.

Fleishman’s sister, Madie ’19, also an EC Scholar, and her parents attended ECU. “I have been a Pirate since the day I was born,” she said. “I wouldn’t pass up the opportunity to represent Pirate Nation.”

She said she chose ECU because of the unique opportunities, resources and support provided by the EC Scholars program and Honors College.

“To me, being an EC Scholar means representing ECU with pride, where I know that I am a part of an intelligent and passionate community,” Fleishman said. “I am honored to be an EC Scholar and surround myself with such a caring and motivated group.”

While Fleishman doesn’t have an end goal for her career just yet, she plans to major in communication. “I am unsure of exactly what I want to do after graduation, but what I do know is that I thrive off of working with others and want to focus on making the world a better place in whatever career I end up in,” she said.

On campus, Fleishman hopes to get involved in the Honors College Student Council as well as service clubs and student government, but she’s also excited to see what else ECU has to offer.

Working with and leading others has been a hallmark of Fleishman’s time at Millbrook High School and in her hometown of Raleigh.

She has served as class president as a student in the International Baccalaureate program at Millbrook. She has been a member of the National Honor Society, the National English Honor Society (historian, vice president), drama club, Spanish club and the UNICEF club. She also played junior varsity tennis and, as a former club soccer player, coached middle school soccer.

This year, she served as president of the Reform Jewish Youth Movement, Mid-Atlantic Region (NFTY-MAR), where she advised the work of five regional board members and 30 local presidents representing about 2,000 teens in congregations across Maryland, Washington D.C., Virginia and North Carolina. She has been involved with the organization throughout high school, including serving as her local youth group president.

“Being given the opportunity to give back to my community meant so much to me,” Fleishman said. “My job allowed me to plan events for hundreds of teens and take my leadership skills to the next level.”

The experience also has influenced Fleishman to pursue a minor in leadership studies at ECU. She hasn’t decided where to study abroad, but is considering Australia, Israel or Italy. “I am so excited that this program allows me to be able to push myself out of my comfort zone and can’t wait to see where I end up,” she said.

The 18-year-old is the daughter of Ed and the late Kristin Fleishman of Raleigh.

“To me, being an EC Scholar means representing ECU with pride, where I know that I am a part of an intelligent and passionate community.”
