East Carolina University celebrated the accomplishments of more than 5,000 graduates with its 111th spring commencement on Friday, delivering a virtual ceremony because of the coronavirus.
Interim Chancellor Ron Mitchelson acknowledged the unusual circumstances during the online commencement that included conferment of degrees for 3,860 undergraduates. The Class of 2020 also includes 1,201 recipients of master’s and doctoral degrees.

W. Craig Matta
Craig Matta, 71, of New Bern, needed only one class to graduate after starting his voyage at ECU more than 50 years ago. Originally from Roanoke Rapids, Matta served in the U.S. Army Reserve and spent three decades working for Brown & Williamson Tobacco Corporation. Matta completed his degree via our Partway Home program.
Serena Mooney
Serena Mooney, 22, of Winterville, will attend ECU’s Brody School of Medicine this fall after earning two undergraduate degrees. She wants to help forgotten communities, especially the aging population. Mooney is an EC Scholar, a Robert H. Wright Alumni Leadership Award winner and graduate of South Central High School.
Jahad Chris Carter
Jahad Chris Carter, 22, of High Point, wants to secure a fellowship or internship before attending law school and getting more involved in politics, with the ultimate goal of reaching the White House. Among his activities, he has been a member of the Student Government Association, served as editor of Expressions magazine and advocated for victims of sexual assault.
Maj. Jessica Georgi
Maj. Jessica Georgi, 34, of Greenville, serves in the Army and is the married mother of a 2-year-old son. Originally from Madison, Alabama, she will earn a graduate degree in health informatics and information management. The Army has selected Georgi to be the next head of a hospital patient administration division at Evans Army Community Hospital in Fort Carson, Colorado, where she will lead a team of 85 people.
Bria Stith
Bria Stith, 22, of Lawrenceville, Virginia, is a member of the ECU women’s track and field team and will earn a bachelor’s degree in communication with a concentration in journalism. Stith, who holds the ECU record in the pentathlon, will be competing another year on the track team while continuing her education this fall in ECU’s master’s degree program in kinesiology with a concentration in sport management.
