Mesyiah Fleming is aiming for the top of the business world
Charlotte’s Mesyiah Fleming credits East Carolina University with providing not only the skills, but also the lifelong friends and connections to succeed in his chosen career.
Fleming, who will graduate Dec. 13 with a Bachelor of Science in economics with a quantitative concentration and a minor in mathematics, said he chose his field of study with a long-term goal in mind: to eventually work as a chief financial officer of a Fortune 500 corporation and later start his own firm.

“I grew up in a household that places a vast level of focus on academics, possessing knowledge, self-development and, most importantly, leadership,” he said. “My field of study directly complements my analytical mind, abstract way of thinking and ability to think strategically.”
He started on the right foot by participating in the Jarvis Leadership Program, a living-learning community aimed at empowering students for academic success through involvement in leadership, citizenship and relationship building. Fleming also became involved with the Student Government Association, serving on the academic affairs committee, and served as president of Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity. He was inducted into the Greek honor society Order of Omega and into Alpha Epsilon Delta, ECU’s health pre-professional honor society.
“Being a part of these amazing organizations helped me improve my leadership skills and also build lifelong connections,” Fleming said. They also provided an opportunity to live out ECU’s motto, Servire, through community service projects on campus and in the local community, including a walk to raise awareness of hydrocephalus, street cleanups and holiday toy drives.
Fleming said he will always remember the faculty and staff who pushed and challenged him to achieve success.
“Until the day I die, purple and gold will be coursing through my veins,” he said. “I will forever be undaunted!”
Fleming plans to pursue a career in business consulting and continue his education by working toward a Master of Business Administration. He is the son of Sabrina Fleming and Alford Holmes.
