Convocations begin Friday

GREENVILLE, N.C.   (May 9, 2013)   —   Sixty-nine medical students will receive their degrees at the annual convocation of the Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University on Friday, May 10.

The convocation begins at 8 p.m. in Wright Auditorium on the ECU campus.

Dr. Benjamin Gersh, assistant professor in the Department of Psychiatric Medicine and Family Medicine at ECU, will be the convocation speaker. Today, the Brody School of Medicine will hold its annual awards day at 3 p.m. in the Brody Auditorium.

At 3 p.m. Friday, the Department of Public Health will hold a recognition ceremony in the Brody Auditorium for its 44 students receiving a master’s of public health degree. The speaker will be Dr. John Morrow, director of the Pitt County Health Department.

Also in the ECU Division of Health Sciences, the College of Allied Health Sciences will hold its convocation at 3 p.m. Saturday in Minges Coliseum. The college will graduate 228 students. Of those, 138 will receive bachelor’s degrees, 60 will receive master’s degrees, and 29 will receive doctorates in physical therapy and one will receive a doctorate in rehabilitation counseling and administration. The speaker will be Dr. Phyllis Horns, vice chancellor for health sciences at ECU. Kelsey Romoser, who will graduate with a doctorate in physical therapy, will give the farewell from students.

The College of Nursing convocation will be at 6 p.m. Saturday in Minges Coliseum. The college will graduate 236 students: 155 bachelor’s students, 75 master’s students, four post-master’s certificate students, and two doctoral students.

Commencement exercises for all ECU graduates will begin at 9 a.m. Friday in Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium. More than 3,690 students are expected to receive their degrees including approximately 2,710 bachelor degree candidates and 982 graduate degree candidates.

Businesswoman and ECU alumna Valeria O. Lovelace will deliver the commencement address. She is founder and president of Media Transformations, an educational research and production company that develops projects to promote learning and positive role models for children.
