‘SHIVER ME TIMBERS’
Pirate polar bears take icy plunge
Shouting and shivering, some 1,100 Pirates splashed into the icy waters of the East Carolina University outdoor pool during the 17th Annual Polar Bear Plunge held Jan. 24. Temperatures in the mid-20s along with supplemental buckets of ice tossed into the water ensured that jumpers would find the experience chilling.
The brave jumpers received a free T-shirt and entrance into prize drawings. Following the jump, participants enjoyed refreshments and an indoor information fair providing details on activities and organizations on campus.
The annual event began in 1997 as part of the grand opening of the Student Recreation Center. Thirty-five students took the plunge the first year and the event has grown significantly each year thereafter.
The Polar Bear Plunge is sponsored by Campus Recreation & Wellness, Campus Living & Dining and Student Involvement and Leadership.
