ECU trustees approve tuition hike

(Dec. 10, 2004)   —   The East Carolina University Board of Trustees today approved a tuition-increase proposal of $300 a year for the 2005-06 academic year. The board also endorsed required student fee increases totaling $173 for the next school year.In addition, the board approved a proposal to increase the annual tuition for graduate students in the MBA and master of accounting programs by $1,080.

David Redwine was the only board member voting against the tuition recommendations.

The proposals now go to the University of North Carolina Board of Governors for consideration early next year.

The tuition increase would bring annual tuition for a North Carolina undergraduate to $2,435 for 2005-06, an increase of 14 percent over current levels.

Total required student fees would rise from $1,319 to $1,500 for 2005-06.

University officials consulted with the Student Government Association on the proposed increases, and the students endorsed the fee proposals.

The undergraduate tuition increase would provide about $5.7 million in additional revenue for the university during the 2005-06 academic year. Of that total, 30 percent would go to increased student financial aid and 70 percent would be allocated to increased salaries to attract and retain highly qualified faculty members.
