Tucker honored for effort to curb substance abuse

GREENVILLE, NC   (May 18, 2004)   —   Carol Ann Tucker, professor of East Carolina University’s College of Health and Human Performance, received recognition for her efforts to study and work with those who suffer from substance abuse.

Tucker received the Art of Prevention Award, presented annually by the Addiction Professionals of North Carolina/National Association of Addiction Professionals.

In addition to her faculty post at ECU, Tucker has directed the college’s Regional Training Center in the Department of Health Education and Promotion since 1985. The substance abuse prevention center is funded through the by the state Division of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services. Through Tucker’s efforts, the center assists people in 41 counties across eastern North Carolina in their efforts to prevent substance abuse.

Tucker also serves on several substance abuse prevention awards, including: NC Substance Abuse Professional Certification Board, the Pitt County Safe and Drug Free Schools Committee and the Eastern North Carolina Substance Abuse Coalition. She is past chair of the statewide Prevention Advisory Committee.

She holds two degrees from East Carolina University, a bachelor of science in health and physical education and a master’s in education.
