Talton receives long-leaf pine award

Jim Talton, vice chairman of the East Carolina University Board of Trustees and a long-time supporter of the university, was awarded one of the state’s highest honors today (June 18) for his contributions to health care.

Talton, who also chairs the ECU board’s Health Sciences Committee, was presented with the Order of the Long-Leaf Pine by ECU Chancellor William V. Muse on behalf of Gov. Mike Easley.

Talton, an ECU graduate, has been a member of the ECU board since 2000 and is a former chairman of the ECU Foundation Board of Directors.

Talton, a retired managing partner of KPMG LLP, is an influential civic leader in Raleigh. He is co-chairman of an independent committee formed to advise the Wake County school board and county commissioners on budget issues, and he is a past chairman of the Greater Raleigh Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors.

The Order of the Long Leaf Pine is presented to individuals who have a proven record of service to the state of North Carolina. Contributions to their community, extra efforts in their career and many years of service to their organization are some of the guidelines by which recipients are selected for this award. The Order of the Long Leaf Pine is among the most prestigious awards presented by the governor of North Carolina. Past recipients include Maya Angelou and Billy Graham.
