ECU Founders Day and Installation
(Feb. 15, 2002) — ECU Founders Day festivities in March will center on the formal installation of Dr. William V. Muse as the 10th chief executive of the university. Planned events include performances, exhibits, dinners and a forum.
The formal installation ceremony, scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. on March 8 in Wright Auditorium, is expected to draw scores of delegates from colleges, universities and learned societies nationwide.
Muse, selected as chancellor a year ago, is expected to use the occasion to detail his vision for East Carolina. Molly Corbett Broad, president of the University of North Carolina, will preside at the ceremony.
A highlight of the activities surrounding the installation will be a community college presidents forum at 2 p.m. in the Special Collections Room of Joyner Library. Muse’s brother, Dr. Clyde Muse, the president of Hinds Community College in Raymond, Miss., will lead the discussion.
The 95th Founders Day celebrations, which commemorate the establishment of East Carolina Teachers Training School by the General Assembly in 1907, will begin at 6:30 p.m. on March 7 with a student art exhibit reception in the Gray Gallery. Student music and drama performances will follow at 8 p.m. in Hendrix Theatre in Mendenhall Student Center.
Activities on March 8 include a community leaders breakfast at 7:30 a.m. at Jarvis Memorial United Methodist Church; a wreath laying at the grave of Gov. Thomas Jarvis at 9 a.m. at Cherry Hill Cemetery; an ECU Centennial Exhibit, open throughout the day at Joyner Library; a luncheon on the grounds in front of Wright Auditorium; dedication of the Ronnie Barnes African-American Resource Center at 3 p.m. on the second floor of Joyner; a celebration of health sciences leadership in the lobby of the Brody School of Medicine Building at 4 p.m.; and the Founders Day Awards Dinner at 7 p.m. in the Great Room at Mendenhall.
A chapel service is planned for 10 a.m. March 9 in the lobby of Jarvis Residence Hall.
Tickets are required for the community leaders breakfast, the luncheon and the awards dinner. They may be obtained at no charge from the Office of Special Events, 328-6447.
Faculty and staff members are invited to participate in the installation ceremony processional. Academic regalia is required for the processional, and those planning to participate should notify the Office of Special Event.
