ECU Trustees elect officers

(July 20, 2001)   —   Charles R. Franklin Jr., director of the Albemarle Mental Health Center in Elizabeth City, today (July 20) was elected chair of the East Carolina University Board of Trustees.

Franklin, a 1964 graduate of ECU, had served two terms as vice chair of the board.

Other officers elected were Vice Chair James R. Talton Jr. of Raleigh and Secretary Stephen D. Showfety of Greensboro. All terms are for one year.

Franklin is chairman of the Board of Directors of Centura Bank in Elizabeth City, a board member of the Eastern Area Health Education Center (AHEC) and a general partner in several real estate companies. He was appointed to the board by the University of North Carolina Board of Governors in 1995 and reappointed in 1999.

Talton, who graduated from ECU in 1965, is a retired managing partner of KPMG LLP, an accounting firm in Raleigh, and is a certified public accountant in both North and South Carolina. He is a recipient of the Distinguished Service Award from the ECU Alumni Association and has been a member of the board since 1999.

Showfety, a 1970 ECU graduate, is president of the Koury Corp. and a former chairman of the Greensboro Area Convention and Visitors Bureau. He was named to the board in 1999.
