Students receive Schweitzer Fellowships
Six students from East Carolina University have received Schweitzer Fellowships for 2011.
The students commit to a year of service with a community agency, devoting more than 600 hours to local communities lacking access to adequate health services.
Holly Bullock is one of six ECU Schweitzer Fellows for 2011.
Below are the students’ names and their service projects:
–Holly Bullock and Vontrelle Roundtree, who are beginning their fourth year of medical school at ECU, will provide comprehensive reproductive health education for male teens in the juvenile justice system using a peer educator model. They will be working at the Lenoir Youth Development Center and Dobbs Youth Development Center in Kinston.
–Aseem Kaul, who is beginning his second year of medical school at ECU, and Laura Larion, a biology graduate student at ECU, will offer HIV/STD testing and education programs in free clinics throughout eastern North Carolina.
–Emily Ross and Erin Slater, who are beginning their second year of medical school at ECU, will work to improve the health and quality of life of seniors by creating and implementing a companionship program for assisted living facility residents. They will be working at Oak Haven Assisted Living in Greenville.
The ECU Schweitzer Fellows are also supported by grants from UHS Physicians, a part of University Health Systems of Eastern Carolina.
Nineteen other graduate students from professional schools in North Carolina also received fellowships. Schweitzer Fellows continue their education while participating in the entry year of the Schweitzer Fellows Program.
The first U.S.-based Schweitzer Fellows Program was founded in Boston in 1991, and the second was in North Carolina in 1994. Other programs are in Baltimore, Chicago, New Hampshire/Vermont, Pittsburgh, the Delaware Valley and San Francisco. Nearly 270 North Carolina Schweitzer Fellows have completed the program.
