Brody graduate dies in bicycle crash

A graduate of the Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University died Friday, July 8, after a collision with a car during the running of “The Grizzly,” a bicycling event connected to the Grandfather Mountain Highland Games.

According to published reports, the N.C. Highway Patrol said 35-year old Erik O. Lie-Nielsen of Winston-Salem was killed in the 7:40 a.m. collision after he lost control of his bicycle while traveling downhill. The bicycle crossed the center line and collided with the car, whose driver was hurt in the crash.

A native of New Bern, Lie-Nielson was an assistant professor of family and community medicine at the Wake Forest University School of Medicine, where he had worked since 2008. He was a 2002 graduate of the Brody School of Medicine and completed residency training in family medicine and a fellowship in geriatrics at Wake Forest. He is survived by twin 5-year-old sons.
