SUPPORTING STUDENT SUCCESS
New academic rules in effect with fall semester
As undergraduate students begin a new semester at East Carolina University, they will need to be aware of recent changes to several academic rules.
The new academic rules—aimed at supporting student success—impact warning, probation, and suspension; course and term withdrawals; and readmission under forgiveness. The rules go into effect with the start of the fall 2015 semester and pertain only to undergraduate students.
“Supporting student success is very important to us, and we continually review our academic policies to ensure that we are supportive of students while they make positive academic progress,” said ECU Provost Ron Mitchelson.
Detailed information about each new rule can be found by visiting www.ecu.edu/registrar, which includes a list of frequently asked questions designed to help the university community better understand the terminology and procedures specific to the rules.
“A pop-up will appear that will take them to more information about the upcoming changes,” Amanda Fleming, associate registrar for registration and records, said of the website. “The academic undergraduate catalog also details the new rules and changes.”
That information can be found at catalog.ecu.edu.
The changes to the rules are considered significant overhauls, Fleming said, and come as part of a mandate from the University of North Carolina system on fostering undergraduate student success. Representatives from across ECU assembled into teams to address amending the rules.
“These teams carefully reviewed our current policies, rules and practices as well as the requirements from UNC GA to ensure compliance,” Fleming said.
Students also will be informed of the new rules through academic advisors, ECU e-mail and social media.
