ECU Police investigating student death
Tuesday, Oct. 22 – Update
The student who passed away in a residence hall on East Carolina University’s campus Saturday, Oct. 19 has been identified as Joseph Robert Harbolt of Emerald Isle.According to Harbolt’s family, he died from complications related to Type 1 diabetes.
Harbolt was a junior at ECU and an intended nursing major.
At approximately 7 p.m. Harbolt was discovered unresponsive by his roommate in their room in Fleming Residence Hall.
ECU continues to offer its support to the friends and family of Joseph Harbolt.
The ECU Counseling Center is available Monday-Friday for anyone seeking counseling services. Walk-in hours are from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. For weekend and after-hours crisis support, please call 252-328-6661 (press 2 if after hours).
Monday, Oct. 21
East Carolina University Police are investigating the death of a student in a residence hall. The death occurred at approximately 7 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 19.
At this time, there is no evidence to suggest foul play. The investigation is ongoing.
Out of respect for the family, the university is withholding the student’s name until the immediate family can notify other family members and close friends.
