Rae Senarighi’s TRANSCEND exhibit coming to ECU

East Carolina University will host Rae Senarighi’s TRANSCEND exhibit in the Main Campus Student Center (Dr. Jesse R. Peel LGBTQ Center) and the Health Sciences Campus Student Center, March 25-30.

Senarighi is a transgender non-binary artist currently based in Portland, Oregon. An artist, designer and muralist, Senarighi is best known for colorful abstracts, intricate typography and vivid portraiture. He began his studies at the University of Montana in 2000 and finished his Bachelor of Fine Arts at the Art Institute of Seattle in 2009, receiving a Hall of Fame Award in 2011. His most recent series, TRANSCEND, celebrates transgender and non-binary individuals throughout the world who are living their lives openly, choosing integrity over safety. The TRANSCEND series has been featured in the San Francisco Weekly, Milwaukee Public Radio and the Philadelphia Metro.

Senarighi’s detailed works are influenced by years of scientific illustration, studying the natural world in micro and macro. His art has been internationally published in Cell, Nature and Science magazines, and his graphic design and typography have been key features at Elevate Your Brand and Peaceful Media. Netflix and GLAAD invited Senarighi to celebrate authentic, accurate portrayals of trans characters in media through a series of paintings. The Portland Trailblazers and Nike worked with Senarighi to celebrate the LGBTQIA+ community through two custom painted jerseys. He also partnered with the Philadelphia Trans Wellness Conference and Washington Health Care for All to support health care for the transgender community.

The exhibit is presented in celebration of Transgender Day of Visibility and in partnership with the dean’s office, College of Fine Arts and Communication and the School of Art and Design. The opening reception will be Monday, March 25 at 5:30 p.m. in the Peel LGBTQ Center. Refreshments will be served and the public is invited to attend.
