Clinton Van Zandt, retired FBI profiler and hostage negotiator, will present “Psychological Profiling: Solving Famous Unsolved Cases,” at 7 p.m. Feb. 21 in Wright Auditorium at East Carolina University. Van Zandt is the third presenter in the 2018-2019 Thomas Harriot College of Arts and Sciences Voyages of Discovery Series.

Tickets are $15 for the public, $10 for ECU faculty and staff and $5 for youth. Tickets may be purchased online at www.ecu.edu/voyages.

Van Zandt was with the FBI for 25 years, where he served as a supervisor with the internationally respected Behavioral Science or “Silence of the Lambs” Unit. He was the chief hostage negotiator for many national and international kidnap and hostage situations, testified before the U.S. Senate and has made more appearances than any other FBI agent (more than 3,000) on national and international television shows on NBC, MSNBC, Fox, CNN, ABC, CBS and NPR.

As an FBI profiler, Van Zandt personally negotiated with Branch Davidian cult leader David Koresh in Waco, Texas. He correctly profiled Oklahoma City Bomber Timothy McVeigh and led the analytical team that helped identify the Unabomber. He has conducted negotiations that brought about the release of hostages held by prison rioters, kidnap victims held by South American guerrillas and terrorists in the Philippines.

Prior to his time with the FBI, Van Zandt was a U.S. Army counter-intelligence agent and a Vietnam War veteran.

A well-known author, Van Zandt regularly assists and consults companies across the U.S. and around the globe with crisis management and violence in the workplace programs. He has spoken before many groups, including the U.S. Naval Academy, American Psychological Association, American Society for Industrial Security and many institutes of higher education. Van Zandt leaves his audiences with valuable insights and critical information that help them better understand human behavior.
