ECU’s Japan Center East hosts meeting

(Feb. 17, 1994)   —   The North Carolina Japan Center East, based at East Carolina University, has received two grants for projects to help improve educational links between Japan and the United States.

Dr. Donald Spence of ECU, said the Japan Center East received $10,000 from the United States-Japan Foundation and $12,990 from the Center for Global Partnership of the Japan Foundation. The grants will support the National Pre Collegiate Japan Projects Network. Developed and directed by Spence and Linda Wojtan of ECU, the network comprises 10 campuses across the country. ECU will use the grants for network administration and to support a planning meeting of the network members. The network planning meeting is scheduled for March in Boston during the annual conference of the Association for Asian Studies. 

Members of the network are; the East West Center at the University of Hawaii, the East Asian Outreach Program at Columbia University, the International Center for Policy Studies at the University of Maryland, the SPICE program at Stanford University, the Social Science Education Consortium, the University of Michigan, the University of Tennessee, the University of Washington, the Five College Center at Smith College and ECU.

Spence and Wojtan have directed the network since its inception five years ago. The network moved its home base to ECU in January of 1993.
