ECU hosts 42 international students
(Feb. 8, 1994) — Talk about far away places! Geography buffs would have a field day at East Carolina University this spring.
There are 42 countries represented on campus and at least one of them, Australia, is newcomer to the community. The total foreign student enrollment is 109. The country with the most students at ECU is the People’s Republic of China. There are 26 students from China enrolled. All except five of the students are majoring in the sciences including chemistry, physics, microbiology and pharmacology. Four students are taking industrial technology and one is majoring in art. The United Kingdom has seven students enrolled. Taiwan has six. Sweden and Australia have four each.
This marks the first time that students from Australia have enrolled at ECU, according to Stephanie Evancho of the ECU International Programs Office. She said the four students are part of an exchange program that also let’s ECU students enroll at Australian campuses. ECU has sent students to Australia since 1992.
The nations represented at ECU are: Algeria, Argentina, Australia, Bangladesh, Brazil, Cameroon, Canada, Costa Rica, Cyprus, Denmark, Ecuador, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hong Kong, Iceland, India, Iran, Italy, Japan, Jordan, Korea, Lebanon, Lithuania, Mexico, Netherlands, Nigeria, Norway, Panama, Pakistan, People’s Republic, Philippines, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Taiwan, Tanzania, Thailand, Turkey, Uganda and the United Kingdom.
