Trustees endorse changes in student fees

(Dec. 7, 2001)   —   The East Carolina University Board of Trustees has endorsed proposed changes that will result in a net increase of $53, or 4.8 percent, in required student fees for the 2002-2003 academic year. Under the proposal, annual student fees will increase from $1,113 this year to $1,166.

The recommended changes, which were determined in consultation with the Student Government Association, will be forwarded to the Office of the President for review and then to the University of North Carolina system Board of Governors for final approval.

Student fees support a variety of services, activities and facilities, including the Student Health Service, Mendenhall Student Center operations, the Student Recreation Center, student transit, computer labs and athletics.

The changes included increases in fees for student government, student health, athletics, information technology and transit. Because falling interest rates allowed the university to reissue bonds that paid for the construction of the Student Recreation Center, debt service fees on the center dropped by $20.

Tuition rates, which are set by the Board of Governors and the General Assembly, have not been established for the 2002-2003 year. Current annual tuition for an undergraduate North Carolina resident is $1,453.
