Carroll Varner named director of ECU Library Services

Carroll Varner, associate dean of university libraries at Illinois State University, has been named director of Academic Library Services at East Carolina University, effective Aug.10. Varner will be the chief administrator of the million-volume Joyner Library, which is nearing completion of a $30 million expansion and renovation.

Richard Ringeisen, vice chancellor for academic affairs, said, “We are tremendously excited that Carroll Varner is joining ECU. He brings vast experience in information technology and the library’s critical role in that arena. His many skills and talents seem to match perfectly with what our library needs at this time.”

Varner, who has been at Illinois State since 1989, holds a B.S. in political science from the University of Tennessee, an M.A. in librarianship from the University of Denver, an M.B.A. in management and finance from the University of Nebraska and a Ph.D. in higher education administration from Illinois State. He succeeds Ken Marks, who accepted a position at the University of Nevada at Las Vegas last year. Gail Munde, associate director of library services, has been serving as acting director.
