ECU begins social work degree in Elizabeth City

(Aug. 30, 2001)   —   The East Carolina University School of Social Work has started an off-campus program in Elizabeth City that offers a Master of Social Work degree. Eighteen students are enrolled in the first classes that are taught on Saturdays.

Martha Early, an ECU Coordinator of Graduate Distance Learning in the School of Social Work , said the students represent an area from west of Ahoskie, through southeastern Virginia, and down the Outer Banks, covering all of the Northeastern North Carolina counties.

“They bring to this program a variety of personal backgrounds, services experience with agencies throughout the area, and goals for future work in many areas of the social work profession,” she said.

The master’s degree program prepares students for leadership roles in health and mental health departments, hospitals, and public and private social services agencies. ECU’s Master of Social Work program is accredited by the Council of Social Work Education. Entrance requirements include a bachelor’s degree from an accredited school and satisfactory scores on either the Miller Analogies Test (MAT) or the Graduate Record Examination (GRE). Students must also have a 2.5 grade point average minimum in their undergraduate work with a 3.0 average for the senior year and at least six courses in the social and behavioral sciences.The Elizabeth City program is the second off-campus master’s program in social work directed by ECU.
