Eastern North Carolina Girl Scouts ‘Scout Out Nursing’

GREENVILLE, N.C. —   More than 100 eastern North Carolina Girl Scouts are expected to attend “Scout Out Nursing” on Saturday, March 31, in the East Carolina University School of Nursing.

The event is aimed at introducing the nursing profession to girls and young women. It is sponsored by the ECU Beta Nu chapter of Sigma Theta Tau, the international honor society for nursing.

Scouts ages 6-17 will join in activities beginning at 1 p.m. including games, crafts, first aid and exercises to identify heart and lung sounds with ECU’s simulation mannequins. Scouts also will learn about the history of nursing. High school participants will have the opportunity to talk to ECU nursing students and discuss admission requirements. Scouts will earn a badge for their participation in the event.

The American Association of Colleges of Nursing encourages educators to promote nursing to youngsters as early as possible. AACN predicts all fifty states will experience nursing shortages by 2015. Nursing schools across the state and ECU are working to meet a University of North Carolina Board of Governors mandate to double the number of nursing graduates by 2010. ECU is the largest producer of new nursing graduates in the state.
