Fifth annual Brody Distinguished Lecture set for March 26

GREENVILLE, N.C.  —   East Carolina University is hosting two lectures by Dr. B. Lachlan Forrow of Harvard Medical School on Monday, March 26. The public is invited to attend.

Forrow, associate professor of medicine at Harvard, director of ethics and palliative care programs at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and president of the national Albert Schweitzer Fellowship based in Boston, Mass., will present the annual Brody Distinguished Lecture at 12:30 p.m. in the Brody School of Medicine Room 2E-92. The title is “Medical Ethics in the 21st Century: What We Learned from the 20th.”

Sponsored by the Brody Foundation, the lectureship series began in 2003 and is funded by the J.S. “Sammy” Brody Medical Scholars Program. The program was established in 1983 to recruit medical students with outstanding academic records, with preference for eastern North Carolina residents, who plan to practice in the region after completing residency training. Three medical students are chosen each year to receive financial assistance annually through the merit scholars program.

Forrow will speak again at 7 p.m. in the Edwin W. Monroe AHEC Conference Center where he will present “International Health Care in the Schweitzer Tradition.” Forrow also serves as the United States representative on the governing council of the Albert Schweitzer Hospital in Lambarene, Gabon, West Africa. The Office of Generalist Programs, with support from the Brody School of Medicine, Pitt County Memorial Hospital and the World Affairs Council of Eastern North Carolina, is sponsoring the evening lecture.
