Brody School of Medicine recognized for graduates headed for family medicine

GREENVILLE, N.C.   (June 5, 2001)   —   The Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University was among 27 medical schools recently recognized for their success in making family practice a top career choice among graduating medical students. The American Academy of Family Physicians presented the awards during the spring conference of the Society of Teachers of Family Medicine April 28-May 2 in Denver. 

The awards were created to promote the goal of having 25 percent of all U.S. medical school graduates enter the specialty of family practice in the Liaison Committee for Medical Education-accredited medical schools. The LCME is the nationally recognized accrediting authority for medical education programs leading to the medical degree in U.S. and Canadian medical schools.

ECU has earned one of six silver awards, which means the schools graduated a three-year average of 25-29.9 percent of medical students into first-year positions in family practice residency programs. ECU ranked fifth in the total listing. Only two schools earned gold awards for having 30 percent or more of their medical students heading into family practice.

Eighteen medical schools earned bronze awards for graduating a three-year average of 20 to 24.9 percent of medical students into first-year positions in family practice residency.

According to Dr. Dean Patton, chairman of the Department of Family Medicine at the medical school, the award isn’t just for his department. “This award is not just about a strong Department of Family Medicine. It is about the entire Brody School of Medicine being committed to its mission,” he said.
