Trustees re-elect officers

The 1999-2000 officers of the ECU Board of Trustees were re-elected by acclamation to a second term at the board’s meeting on July 14.

Phil Dixon of Greenville will continue his role as the board’s chair. Charles Franklin of Elizabeth City is the vice chair and Willie Martin of Wilmington, Del. is the secretary.

Action by the board included the purchase of three properties at 514, 902 and 922 East 14th Street. One of the properties was formerly Bowen Laundromat and the other two were dwellings. An office suite at the athletic complex was approved for naming in honor of the late Clarence Stasavich who coached at ECU during the 1960s and was the school athletic director until 1975.

“Coach Stas” is credited for helping the school raise funds to construct the original Ficklen Stadium, establishing the Century Club (later the ECU Educational Foundation), and scheduling ECU’s first series of games with N.C. State, UNC-Chapel Hill and Wake Forest. As a coach, his record was 50-27-1 The board approved the recommendation of Vincent A. DiMartino as the Robert L. Jones Visiting Distinguished Professor of the School of Music.

A professor at Centre College in Danville, Ky., DiMartino has performed on trumpet with numerous entertainers including the Cincinnati Pops, Lionel Hampton, Chuck Mangione, Pearl Bailey, Henry Mancini, Doc Severinsen and Dave Brubeck. In reports, Richard Ringeisen announced that Rosina Chia will become the interim dean of the School of Industry and Technology. Elmer Poe will serve as the interim associate dean.

The dean’s post was vacated by Darryl Davis who was recently named associate vice chancellor for distributed education and academic information technology.

The board also heard comments from Brenda Killingsworth of the School of Business and Bob Morrison of the Department of Chemistry, outgoing and incoming chairs of the faculty. Killingsworth urged the board to include the Faculty Senate chair as an ex-officio member to participate in executive sessions, but without voting privileges.
