ECU awards full academic scholarships to 20 NC high school students
Twenty high school seniors from across North Carolina have been selected for the prestigious EC Scholars program at East Carolina University.
The recipients are Marco Agostini, Jayda Bodine, Hannah Bolick, Nicole Cavaliere, Hannah Coalson, Francesca DeFranco, Luke Fogarty, Nia Gilmore, Jordan Hock, Carly Jarvis, Grace Krell, Katelyn McKinney, Elliot Paul, Naimi Pothiwala, Arvind Rajan, Shaelyn Raleigh, Alexander Teodorescu, Sophia Villani, Carmen Walker and Kristina Whitley.
EC Scholars is ECU’s most prestigious and competitive undergraduate academic scholarship program. The merit scholarship recognizes outstanding academic performance, commitment to community engagement and strong leadership skills. Recipients are admitted to ECU’s Honors College and receive a scholarship for four years, along with a stipend for study abroad, for a total value of approximately $62,000.
“The most enjoyable part of working with each EC Scholar class is watching them realize their own possibilities and embrace their role as an engaged citizen,” said Dr. Todd Fraley, director of the EC Scholars program. “As they are exposed to new ideas, people and experiences, both on campus and abroad, they gain a better sense of the impact they can have as an individual, but also as part of a group of highly motivated and intellectually curious young people.”

Agostini is an intended computer science major. He is home-schooled and attends Nash Community College. He is the son of Lena and Wally Agostini of Wilson.
Bodine is the daughter of Wayne and Connie Bodine of Jacksonville and a senior at Lejeune High School. She plans to major in biology.
Bolick is an intended English major and a senior at John T. Hoggard High School. She is the daughter of Keith and Carla Bolick of Wilmington.
Cavaliere is an intended biology major and a senior at Weddington High School. She is the daughter of Rick and Donna Cavaliere of Weddington.

Coalson intends to earn dual degrees in biology and chemistry. She is a senior at T.C. Roberson High School and the daughter of Barry Coalson and Norah Holmes of Fletcher.
DeFranco is the daughter of Lisa and Frank DeFranco of Charlotte and a senior at Northwest School of the Arts. She plans to major in nursing.
Fogarty is a senior at J.H. Rose High School and the son of John and Christine Fogarty of Greenville. He is an intended business management major.
Gilmore is an intended public health studies major and an alternate for the early assurance program at the Brody School of Medicine at ECU, which guarantees students a spot in an upcoming class of medical students, provided they meet the requirements of an undergraduate degree program. A senior at Corinth Holders High School, she is the daughter of Lonnie Gilmore Jr. and Nina Gilmore of Clayton.

Hock is the son of Lisa and David Hock of Franklinton and a senior at Franklin Academy. He plans to earn dual degrees in mechanical engineering and fine arts.
Jarvis is a senior at Franklin Academy and the daughter of Beth and Steve Jarvis of Wake Forest. She is an intended secondary English education major.
Krell plans to major in biomedical engineering. She is a senior at West Forsyth High School and the daughter of Roy and Linda-Sue Krell of Clemmons.
McKinney is the daughter of Michelle and Darren McKinney of Sims. A senior at Hunt High School, she plans to major in psychology.

Paul is home-schooled and an intended engineering major. He is the son of Nancy and Ravi Paul of Greenville.
Pothiwala is the daughter of Ishita and Amit Pothiwala of Apex. A senior at Panther Creek High School, she plans to major in public health studies.
Rajan is a senior at William G. Enloe High School and an intended biomedical engineering major. He is the son of Thiruppathi Rajan Gopalakrishnan and Sudha Rajan of Raleigh.
Raleigh is a senior at Athens Drive Magnet High School and has not declared a major. She is the daughter of Jill and Brian Raleigh of Raleigh.

Teodorescu is a senior at J.H. Rose High School and an intended biology major. He is the son of Vera Tabakova of Greenville and Dan Teodorescu of Richmond, Virginia.
Villani is the daughter of Deborah and Kenneth Villani of Winterville and a senior at D.H. Conley High School. An intended public health studies major, she is an alternate for the early assurance program in the Brody School of Medicine.
Walker is the daughter of Melinda and Louis Walker of Raleigh and a senior at William G. Enloe High School. Her intended major is psychology.
Whitley is a senior at Forest Hills High School and the daughter of Chad and Jennifer Whitley of Marshville. She intends to earn dual degrees in history and history education.
EC Scholars have completed a rigorous three-tier selection process that includes meeting Honors College admissions criteria, having an additional faculty review and completing an on-campus interview. This year’s incoming class has an average combined math/verbal SAT score of 1355, an average ACT score of 28.9 and an average unweighted GPA of 3.89.
Fall semester classes begin Aug. 20 at ECU.
