North Carolina Literary Review accepting submissions, increasing honorarium

The North Carolina Literary Review is accepting submissions for the 2018 Alex Albright Creative Nonfiction Prize. Submissions are being accepted May 15 through July 1. Randall Kenan, professor in the Department of English and Comparative Literature at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, will serve as the final judge for this year’s writing competition.
Dr. Margaret D. Bauer, editor of the NCLR, also announced that this year’s honorarium has increased from $250 to $1,000 thanks to a donation by a generous NCLR reader.
“This is terrific news for NCLR and for creative nonfiction,” said Alex Albright, founding editor of the NCLR for whom the prize is named. “From John Lawson in the 1700s to Rachel Carson in the 1950s and ’60s, and on through Tim Tyson, Jan DeBlieu, Bland Simpson and Philip Gerard, North Carolina writers have been producing important creative nonfiction that has made a difference in the worlds they have documented and it is perfectly appropriate that NCLR’s prize for outstanding creative nonfiction now can be so financially rewarding.”
Established in 2015, the competition is open to anyone who fits the NCLR definition of a North Carolina writer: current or previous residents of North Carolina or a writer who uses North Carolina as a subject matter. Finalists will be considered for publication in NCLR’s print and online versions and may receive an honorarium. This year’s winner will receive $1,000 and publication in NCLR.
NCLR was established in 1992. It earned the Best New Journal Award from the Council of Editors of Learned Journals in 1994 and has earned four additional CELJ awards in the more than 25 years since its first issue.
