Congressman Butterfield holds Health Awareness Day at ECU

United States Congressman G.K. Butterfield held a health awareness day June 1 on the East Carolina University Health Sciences Campus. Along with Butterfield, ECU experts on diabetes, health disparities, infectious disease and oral health participated.

After opening remarks at 9 a.m. from Butterfield and Dr. Michael J. Lewis, vice chancellor for health sciences at ECU, a program with four panel discussions focused on health problems affecting eastern North Carolina. A health walk around Lake Laupus followed the discussions.

Health screenings were conducted by ECU physician-faculty members for attendees.

“The congressman’s concerns for the health of the citizens of his district dovetails with the concerns of the university and medical school and its mission to improve the health of our region,” said Al Delia, director of federal relations at ECU and who worked with the congressman’s office to organize the event.

Butterfield represents the 1st Congressional District of North Carolina, which has 600,000 people in its 23 counties.
