Rebel wins 12th Pacemaker award

East Carolina University’s student-run literary magazine, Rebel, won its 12th Pacemaker award Oct. 31 at the 90th National College Media Convention in Orlando, Fla.
Consider by many the Pulitzer Prize of college student media, the award was presented by The Associated Collegiate Press.
Rebel was one of four magazines to win for general excellence in the 4-year literary magazine category from among eight finalists and hundreds of entries.
Since 1927, the Pacemaker has been the highest honor available to ACP members and is considered one of the most prestigious awards in collegiate media. Rebel last won the Pacemaker in 2009. Before that, Rebel won the Pacemaker in 2004, 2003, 2002, 2001, 2000, 1999, 1997, 1996, 1985 and 1984.
The 53rd edition of Rebel was edited by ECU graduate Anna Vaughn Creech of Tarboro and staff members Rich Griffis of Burlington, JoEllen Pollard of Macclesfield, and Alex Watson of Apex, all graphic design majors. Graphic design faculty members Craig Malmrose and Gunnar Swanson and Student Media director Paul Isom were advisers. Rebel is a unit of the ECU office of Student Media.
The other winners in the four-year literary magazine category, selected by professional journalists from Quintessence Publishing Co., were Metrosphere, from Metropolitan State College of Denver; MiddleWestern Voice, Elmhurst College, Elmhurst, Ill.; and The Bridge, Bridgewater State Univ., Bridgewater, Mass.
Rebel was the only winner from North Carolina. Rebel also won 2nd place, Best of Show at the conference.
In addition to Rebel, the ECU office of Student Media oversees the production of ECU’s student-run multicultural magazine, Expressions; radio station WZMB-FM; Campus 31 TV; ECU’s student-run yearbook, Buccaneer; and student-run newspaper, The East Carolinian.
The Associated Collegiate Press is a nonprofit education membership association and a division of the National Scholastic Press Association. It is the largest and oldest membership organization for college student media in the United States.
