ECU to award honorary degree

(May 7, 2001)   —   Former North Carolina Supreme Court Chief Justice Henry Frye will be awarded an honorary doctor of letters degree at East Carolina University’s Spring Commencement on May 12.

Frye, who served on the court from 1993 to 2000 and was North Carolina’s first African-American chief justice, delivered the graduation speech at the Brody School of Medicine last year.

He holds an undergraduate degree from North Carolina A&T State University and a law degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He is currently associated with the firm of Brooks, Pierce, McLendon, Humphrey and Leonard in Greensboro.

The ECU ceremony will begin at 9:30 a.m. in Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium. More than 3,800 candidates will be awarded degrees and Molly Corbett Broad, president of the 16-campus University of North Carolina, will be the featured speaker.
