Vedika Modi
Vedika Modi, an 18-year-old Charlotte resident, chose to be a student at East Carolina University this fall because she believes the university will help shape her into a better person who leaves her mark on the world.
“In the short time I have been in contact with the university, I have already noticed that the general atmosphere is palpably different than most colleges I have visited,” Modi said. “ECU is a welcoming and accepting place where I feel I will make a difference and learn more about the world and my place in it.”
Modi is one of 20 freshmen entering ECU this fall as an EC Scholar, the most prestigious undergraduate award program offered at ECU. The four-year merit scholarship recognizes outstanding academic performance, commitment to community engagement and strong leadership skills. Recipients receive an Honors College scholarship, along with a stipend for study abroad, for a total value of nearly $63,000. Modi also has been accepted for the early assurance program in ECU’s Brody School of Medicine upon satisfactory completion of her undergraduate degree.
“Being an EC Scholar is an amazing opportunity that I never thought would happen,” she said. “I am so excited to have these new amazing experiences with the EC Scholars and staff, and learn more about each other. The program has proven itself to be one of the most remarkable and caring ones I have seen thus far, and I can’t wait to become a part of it.”
Modi plans on joining multiple leadership and community service clubs at ECU.
“I hope to join the Young Democrats club on campus and take part in both English and biology research while on campus,” she explained.
For her study abroad experience, she’d like to travel to Ireland, a place some of her favorite writers have called home.
“I would love to immerse myself in the surroundings that once inspired those writers,” she said.
After graduation, she plans to go to medical school to pursue a career in pediatrics. While serving patients in rural or underserved areas, she’d also like to build her own private practice.
This summer she plans to spend time with her family and friends.
She is the daughter of Anita Mehta and Vibhakar Modi.
