Muse not a candidate for Mississippi Post
(June 26, 2002) — Chancellor William V. Muse declared today (June 26) that he is not in the running for the top job at Mississippi State University.
“I am not a candidate for the presidency of Mississippi State,” Muse said.
“I am proud and happy to be the chancellor of East Carolina University,” he said. “The coming years at ECU will be marked by excitement and innovation as we grow in both size and stature, and I am looking forward to being a part of that.”
Media reports had indicated that Muse was being recruited by Mississippi State, the largest university in that state.
Muse said the speculation was understandable. “I was born in Mississippi and many of my relatives live there and many of them have degrees from Mississippi State,” he said. His brother, Dr. Clyde Muse, is president of Hinds Community College, the largest community college in Mississippi.
Muse arrived at ECU last Aug. 1. He previously had served as president of both Auburn University in Alabama and the University of Akron in Ohio.
At ECU, he is in the process of choosing three new vice chancellors and has initiated outreach efforts and joint ventures with officials in Greenville and throughout eastern North Carolina.
