East Carolina University’s School of Theatre and Dance is making history this semester.

Fall Dance 2018 will be the first time that the dance department has put on two main-stage concerts in one year, as well as including student choreography in the show.

The student choreographers, Danyel Beaver and Kaelyn Sterling, have been preparing and practicing their dancers since the second week of the semester. Beaver is a senior double major in dance performance and journalism who will graduate in December. Sterling is a senior dance performance major and will graduate in May 2019.

“I like to add a lot of musical theatre and acting in my dances, so they tell a story,” Beaver said.

Beaver said that her dance is mainly about family and divorce, which means a lot to her because she experienced it growing up.

Beaver also included an interracial couple and a gay person finding out his true identity in her dance.

I wanted it to touch so many little things about family and different situations so that somebody in the audience could at least relate to it,” Beaver said.

Sterling said the focus of her dance is about coping.

“I want it to be about something different for everyone, because everyone copes with different things,” Sterling said.

The dance concert will be held in the McGinnis Theatre Friday, Nov. 30 through Tuesday, Dec. 4. Tickets are $10 for students and $15 for the public. Tickets can be purchased on the ECU School of Theatre and Dance website or at the McGinnis Theatre Box Office.
