ECU attorney asked to resign

Chancellor Steve Ballard said that he has asked University Attorney Ben Irons to resign from his administrative position with East Carolina University.
“It is time to make a change in the attorney’s office,” Ballard said. “Ben Irons’ resignation will give me the opportunity to continue building the leadership team at East Carolina.”

Ballard added, “I am deeply appreciative of Ben’s years of dedicated service to the university. He has expressed a desire to remain with ECU in a teaching role, and we will certainly try to accommodate him.”

Irons, who has been the university’s chief legal counsel since 1988, said, “I am thankful that I have had the opportunity to work with so many good people during my years as university attorney. I will always remember them, and I look forward to the future with anticipation.” His resignation is effective March 4.

ECU will conduct a national search to identify Irons’ successor.
