Tenth annual ECU Neuroscience Symposium to be Nov. 25

Alzheimer’s disease will be the main topic at the 10th annual East Carolina University Neuroscience Symposium Nov. 25 in Greenville.
The daylong event will be at the Edwin W. Monroe Eastern AHEC Conference Center at 2000 Venture Tower Drive. It’s free and open to the public. The first speaker begins at 8:30 a.m.

Speakers will cover the latest information regarding molecular mechanisms promoting nerve growth and future directions for treatment of neurological diseases such as Alzheimer’s, schizophrenia, AIDS-related neurological disorders and substance abuse.

Dr. George Kunos, scientific director of the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, will deliver the keynote address, titled, “Endocannabinoids and Energy Homeostasis.”

Other speakers are from Florida State University and the pharmaceutical company GlaxoSmithKline.

The program is jointly sponsored by the 2008 Grass Traveling Scientist Program, a chapter grant from the Society for Neuroscience, the Harriet and John Wooten Laboratory of Alzheimer’s Disease and Neurodegenerative Disease Research.
