ECU Communication Sciences and Disorders department shines at convention

The Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders celebrated several accomplishments at the annual Spring Convention of the North Carolina Speech, Hearing & Language Association, April 6-9 at the Koury Convention Center in Greensboro, NC.
Kathleen T. Cox accepted the role of president of the association, beginning July 1. She has previously served the group on several convention committees, chairing the planning committee for 3 years, and presenting at Fall Conference or Spring Convention.
Martha “Betty” Smith was awarded the State Clinical Achievement Award for outstanding contribution for the birth to 3-year-old population. Monica S. Hough and Sherri Winslow were awarded the Public Information Award for the Aphasia Support Group they developed in the ECU Speech-Language and Hearing Clinic, as well as numerous public service appearances and articles. Cox and Smith, along with Lori Kincannon, will serve as members of the organization’s Board of Directors or standing committees.
Faculty and students who presented at the conference included Kathleen T. Cox with doctoral student Amit Kelkar, Heather L. Ramsdell, and doctoral students Daniel Hudock, Donna Wolfe and Aphroditi Gouvousis.
Courtney Durham, a speech-language pathology student, was awarded the Student Achievement Award and Scholarship for outstanding performance as a graduate student in speech-language pathology and audiology. The ECU MS, Speech-Language Pathology students won the Student Membership Award for having the highest percentage of enrolled students joining as student members of NCSHLA, as compared to the other five training programs in the state of NC.
The NCSHLA is a professional association that promotes and advocates for the professional practice of the speech, language and hearing sciences as well as  communicatively impaired citizens in North Carolina. The organization includes more than 1,000 speech and audiology professionals across the state.
