Holland’s contract amended
The East Carolina University Board of Trustees on Wednesday approved an amendment to Athletic Director Terry Holland’s contract to increase his salary by $32,400 to $356,400 a year.
The board, citing Holland’s leadership and success, made the increase retroactive to Jan. 1, 2008, but specified that he would not be eligible for another raise until 2010.
Robert V. Lucas, chair of the board’s University Affairs Committee, which oversees athletics, said, “We believe that we have strong leadership at ECU, and we want to recognize that leadership and keep the team in place.”
Lucas noted Holland’s accomplishments in such areas as increased attendance at football games and improved academic performance of student-athletes.
According to data released this week, eight ECU sports teams are graduating athletes at a higher rate than the national average. Earlier this year, Conference USA reported that of the 17 varsity sports recognized by the conference, ECU had the best grade-point average in four.
