Reader’s Theater explores family relationships in a forced living arrangement

Students in the Brody School of Medicine and the College of Nursing will present a Reader’s Theater performance of the short story “Breathing” on Thursday, Oct. 23, at 5:15 p.m. in the College of Nursing Health Sciences Building Room 1120. Discussion will follow. The public is invited to attend.

“Breathing” is about an elderly father who cannot live on his own but resents having to move in with his son’s family. It focuses on the impact the forced living arrangement has on family relations and individuals. The timely story explores a situation that is becoming more common in modern American society.

The story is written by Dr. Jay Baruch, an emergency medicine physician who teaches at Brown University. The story appears in his 2007 book “Fourteen Stories: Doctors, Patients and Other Strangers.”

The purpose of reader’s theater is to foster a closer relationship between health care professionals and the people they serve. For more information, call Dorothy Rentschler at 744-6382 or the Department of Medical Humanities at 744-2797.
