2019 in photos, video
ECU’s photographers and videographers get the first look and behind-the-scenes peek at many campus happenings. Below, they select their favorite shots and videos from 2019.
PHOTOS
Farm Stress
This photo is a favorite because of the framing with the wheat and farmer. This is from a story about the North Carolina Agromedicine Institute – a partnership between ECU, North Carolina State University and North Carolina A&T State University – which is working to target farm stress and pair farmers with resources to help them tackle issues of anxiety or depression.

Foggy Morning
On the day this photo was taken, I arrived to work just before 7:30 a.m. and I immediately noticed the campus was shrouded in fog. I waited until I got students walking around the Cupola on their way to class and hoped that would add a nice touch to the frame. I also received one of the highest awards and honors in my entire career as a photographer when I learned this image was awarded Best in Show in the University Photographer’s Association of America monthly image contest in November 2019.

Bubbling Celebration
This photo was taken at a Freeboot Friday event, held in downtown Greenville ahead of each home football game as an opportunity for the community to come together. This photo is a favorite due to the framing of the bubble and joy of the child, Avery Lee.

Campus FaceTime
This is one of my favorite images from 2019 because I feel the image depicts a nice moment and slice of life on campus. I also think the image does a good job of portraying student Abigail Lewis’ personality while also showing the way students connect and stay in touch with family members using the latest technology available to them.

Community School
Dr. Ron Mitchelson, provost at the time, reads with a student at the ECU Community School. The Community School, a laboratory school that serves as a training site for future teachers and administrators, is a collaboration between ECU and Pitt County Schools. This photo has been one of my favorites because it shows interim Chancellor Mitchelson and his concern for the community.

Concentration
This image is one of my favorites from 2019 because it turned out to be a nice photo from a basic assignment. I feel it also does a great job of showing the confidence and dedication of students at ECU.

VIDEOS
It was inspiring to see so many dentists volunteer their time to help a community in need. On top of capturing those moments, this video includes my favorite shots of the year. Watching false teeth being created and shaped is a fascinating process, and I’m happy I had my camera with me to record it.

I’m going to have to say my favorite video of the year is the one on Caitlin Palmer. To me, Caitlin is a student other students should look to as a role model. She’s worked very hard on her academics but also applied to many different scholarships.
Too often, students will go after the big scholarships and forget there are a ton of smaller scholarships that are very accessible. In Caitlin’s situation, many small scholarships added up and she will walk away from ECU with her undergraduate and graduate degrees carrying zero student loan debt.
As we know, student loan debt can be a burden on young professionals. Hopefully, current and future students can learn from Caitlin’s experience and, with some hard work, walk away from their ECU education debt-free.
