ECU OA: Azari Dedeaux

Major: Biology

Hometown: Fayetteville

Why did you choose ECU and what are some things that you love most about ECU? The environment was beautiful and felt like home away from home. I love the self-development and friendships I’ve gained from my time here. As a student and resident advisor, I’ve been able to interact and work among almost every branch of staff on campus, seeing firsthand the dedication put into our community.

What do you remember from your own orientation that made you want to be an OA? My OA was so kind and open which made me feel safe to open up as well as trust in my decision to come to ECU. I wanted to do this for others and be that welcoming person to give them relief amid a new journey.

How will your experiences shape your approach as an OA? My experiences throughout life and as a returner to this position have taught me how to be kind to all which includes giving others grace to understand what/why/how in their own approaches. I use this to be more patient, open and calm in resolving situations and coming to the best results. I will be able to approach this year as a better version of myself to take not only welcoming these students but also being a good coworker to another level!

What do you hope incoming students and family members takeaway from orientation? I hope incoming students and family can take away the amazing environment ECU has to offer that I have come to love. I hope they can see how invested we are in offering resources, support, and love into their journeys to success here. Ultimately, I want the student as well as the family to find relief in knowing their well-being is truly prioritized inside and outside of classes at our university.
