For Rocky Mount native Ava Williams, finding success was a huge motivator in her college decision process.

“Selection Sunday was a day of excitement and nervousness, but after meeting everyone with the Honors College, I ultimately felt at home,” she said. “With so many pathways and opportunities available to me, I knew I could be successful at East Carolina University, and that the staff and supportive community would help me get there.”

Williams will begin her journey as a nursing major this fall as one of 20 Brinkley-Lane Scholars, the most prestigious undergraduate award program offered at ECU. The four-year merit scholarship recognizes outstanding academic performance, commitment to community engagement and strong leadership skills. Recipients receive a fully funded education, covering the cost of tuition, fees, room and board for both in-state and out-of-state students and unique high impact experiences, as well as the ability to explore the world with a $5,000 study abroad stipend.

“Being a Brinkley-Lane Scholar means being a part of a community of successful, academically driven students who lead, grow and change together,” she said.

After getting her undergraduate degree in nursing, Williams plans to pursue a graduate degree in nursing to become a nurse practitioner and specialize in dermatology.

During her time at Rocky Mount High School, Williams was president of the Rocky Mount Debu-ette Club, captain of the varsity soccer team and captain of the club volleyball team. She looks forward to continuing to play soccer while at ECU at the intramural or club level, joining student organizations and a sorority and getting involved in campus ministry.

One of the personal strengths she brings to the Brinkley-Lane Scholar community is an ability to care and serve others.

“I hope to continue to lead by example, show kindness to others and encourage those around me to always strive to be a better version of themselves every day,” said the daughter of Chip and Julie Williams.

While studying abroad makes her nervous, she’s also excited about stepping out of her comfort zone and getting a chance to see the world and a change of scenery. Currently, she plans to study abroad in Tuscany, Italy.

“I hope to travel to many countries and experience various cultures while abroad,” she said. “After a year of having a foreign exchange student from Italy, I would love to experience life in Italy as she did here. Additionally, I believe that Tuscany will be a great place to learn new things and gain a new perspective on life.”

For her first year, Williams has set a personal goal of making new friends, being academically challenged and experiencing personal growth during this new chapter of her life.

However, before classes start in August, she plans to travel, work and spend time with her family.

“I hope to continue to lead by example, show kindness to others and encourage those around me to always strive to be a better version of themselves every day.”
