GREENVILLE, N.C. (11/14/2024) — Emanuel Gruber, a cello and chamber music professor in East Carolina University’s School of Music, has released a new recording of Johannes Brahms’ cello sonatas with pianist Arnon Erez.

Gruber said the sonatas have been a favorite of cellists for 150 years and recording his own interpretation of the works was a fulfillment of a long-time dream.

“These sonatas became part of the core cello repertoire along with Bach’s cello suites and Beethoven’s sonatas and variations,” he said. “When recording became available, cellists, starting with Pablo Casals, recorded them and inspired us to follow in their steps.”

Gruber is celebrated as a soloist, chamber musician, recording artist and teacher. He has collaborated with artists such as Neville Marriner, Rudolf Barshai, Shelomo Mintz, Pinkas Zukerman, Miriam Fried, Philippe Entremont, Jean Bernard Pommier, Tamas Vasary and Janos Starker. He has been principal cellist of the Israel Chamber Orchestra and co-principal of the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra. He was a member of Sequoia Quartet, Camerata Trio, Tel Aviv Piano Quartet, and the leader of the Israel Cello Ensemble.

The CD is available on the Bridge Records website.
