New board members announced for ECU Alumni Association
The East Carolina University Alumni Association (ECUAA) welcomed three new members to its board of directors. The newly elected members, Dr. Akeen Hamilton, Jacob Quinn and Morgan Squatriglia, joined the board in July and are eligible to serve two three-year terms that conclude in 2030.
Board members are responsible for providing strategic direction and professional expertise to support the university’s alumni engagement initiatives. The new members will bring varied experiences and perspectives to inform, involve and serve the ECU family throughout their lifelong relationship with the university.
Amanda Murer ’99, associate vice chancellor for alumni relations, said the new board members will work to advance the association and connect with the 195,000-plus alumni around the world.
Hamilton ’10 ’12, a native of Kingston, Jamaica, immigrated to Burlington at the age of 6. He earned a bachelor’s degree in rehabilitation services and a master’s in health education and promotion from ECU. He also earned a doctoral degree from the University of South Carolina in 2022.
He served as a Peace Corps volunteer from 2014 to 2017 in a rural community in the Limpopo province of South Africa, providing HIV prevention and health education to his host community. He also completed an optional volunteer assignment with the U.S. Embassy in Pretoria, South Africa. Public health policy continues to be one of his primary professional interests.
“Service and giving back are essential components to strengthening the ECU community that has supported my growth and success in so many ways throughout the years,” Hamilton said. “I have always felt a sense of gratitude and responsibility to uplift the continued excellence and legacy of my beloved alma mater.”
Hamilton resides in Washington, D.C., and volunteers as the events leader with the ECU D.C. Metro alumni chapter.

“I am extremely fortunate for the opportunities I had at ECU and the impacts they’ve made on my life, starting as a Freshman Immersion Program Scholar through the Pirate Academic Success Center (PASC). Outside the classroom, I became heavily involved with ECU Athletics,” Quinn said. “Since graduation I have continued to support ECU by working with the construction management department as a mentor, advisor and supporter. I hope to continue supporting and growing ECU and the alumni association with an unwavering desire to serve.”
Quinn lives in Swansboro, where he serves as the president for the ECU Crystal Coast alumni chapter.
