Atkins joins ECU as vice provost for student affairs
Kemal Atkins has joined East Carolina University as vice provost for student affairs.
Before coming to ECU, Atkins was assistant vice president for academic and student affairs for the University of North Carolina General Administration. And for four years prior, he served as director of academic and student affairs at UNC-General Administration.
Interim Provost Marilyn Sheerer said, “Kemal Atkins is a talented and experienced professional, and we are excited that he has joined our team at ECU. He has an excellent background, and his knowledge of the UNC system will be very valuable to us as we move forward.”
Atkins earned his undergraduate and masters degrees in English literature at Appalachian State University and is pursuing his doctorate in higher education administration at N.C. State University.
As vice provost for student affairs, Atkins will lead 12 departments with 500 staff members and work closely with the ECU Police Department chief and the director of advancement for student affairs and will provide leadership and vision on issues related to the undergraduate experience and student retention.
