Fallon takes helm of Brody’s pathology department

Dr. John T. Fallon was named chair of the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at East Carolina University’s Brody School of Medicine, effective Sept. 1.

Most recently, Fallon was chair of the Department of Pathology at New York Medical College, where he also served as professor of pathology and medicine. He was an adjunct professor of pathology at Mount Sinai School of Medicine and director of pathology and laboratory services at Westchester Medical Center.
“Dr. Fallon brings a unique blend of expertise in classroom instruction, department leadership and the health care industry,” said Dr. Mark Stacy, Brody dean and vice chancellor for ECU’s Division of Health Sciences. “His accomplishments in these areas are outstanding, and we are pleased he will continue his dynamic leadership in pathology here at Brody.”
Fallon, who earned a PhD and MD in 1974 from Albany Medical College, has held teaching positions with Harvard Medical School and Harvard-Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s Division of Health Sciences and Technology. He is a 2005 Diplomate of the American Board of Pathology in Anatomic Pathology and earned the 2017 Distinguished Achievement Award from the Society of Cardiovascular Pathology. He holds memberships in the Association of Pathology Chairs and the Association of Molecular Pathology.
His major interests include pathophysiology of ischemic heart disease, experimental vascular injury, vascular thrombosis, and genome sequencing of microbes, human cancers and genetics.
Fallon has served since 1991 on the editorial board of the journal Cardiovascular Pathology and has authored hundreds of articles, books, book chapters, reviews and other educational publications.
Brody’s Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine is home to approximately 20 faculty members and 10 residents and has a surgical pathology volume of approximately 22,000-24,000 specimens per year.
