ECU tests ECU Alert – IP Phone system

GREENVILLE, N.C.  —   In the spirit of National Weather Service Severe Weather Awareness week, East Carolina University will test a new emergency notification system on Thursday, March 5, at 11 a.m.  

The ECU Alert – IP Phone emergency broadcast system relays voice and text messages to Cisco IP phones. These phones have been installed in offices and classrooms on ECU’s east campus, in the East Carolina Heart Institute at ECU and in several other locations on west campus. The test will not be broadcast to Nortel or other phones.  

During the test, ECU faculty, staff and students will hear three beeps followed by a voice message originating from the IP phones. The voice message will be repeated two times. A text message will appear on the phone screen.

To silence the voice message, press “stop.” 

To view the entire text message, press the button for “details.” 

To delete the text message from your screen, press “exit.”

The ECU Alert- IP Phone system is one of several ways ECU notifies employees and students of emergency situations. Other means include Alert e-mails and pop-up messages, regular updates to the Alert web site, text messaging to personal cell phones and phone hotline recordings. The ECU Alert system is used to warn of tornado warnings, chemical spills, fires, dangerous intruders and other campus emergencies.
