ECU student artists, musicians help kick off holidays
The holidays will be brighter with student-made artwork from the School of Art and Design at East Carolina University.
The annual Visual Arts Forum Holiday Sale will be Thursday through Saturday in Jenkins Fine Arts Center in the Wellington B. Gray Gallery on Fifth Street on ECU’s campus. Hours are noon to 6 p.m. Thursday, noon to 8 p.m. Friday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday.
“This is a great opportunity to do some shopping that directly supports our students,” said Kate Bukoski, director of the School of Art and Design. “From original paintings, prints and photographs to scarves, jewelry, mugs, sculptures, figurines, cards and more — you can always find something for yourself or to gift. Seeing ECU art and design students’ creativity on display is always a treat!”
Proceeds benefit ECU student art guilds. Items will include jewelry, scarves, textiles, metal sculpture, photography, paintings, prints, ceramics and much more.
In addition, a handblown glass holiday sale will open to the public Dec. 2. Glass ornaments, flowers, vases, cups, bowls and sculptures made at ECU’s GlasStation will be available for purchase in the College of Fine Arts and Communication at the Proctor-Yongue House on Fifth Street (across from Jenkins Fine Arts Center). Proceeds will support the GlasStation facility and programs.
Supporters of the college (Friends of the School of Art and Design, School of Music, S. Rudolph Alexander Performing Arts Series, etc.) will have an opportunity to shop first during a VIP Preview Sale from 4-6 p.m. on Dec. 1. The public sale is 3-8 p.m. Dec. 2 (during Greenville’s First Friday event) and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Dec. 3.
Also on Dec. 3, music will fill Fifth Street during TubaChristmas, which will host two performances at noon and 1 p.m. at the Proctor-Yongue House.
ECU professors, students and community musicians will participate in an outdoor performance featuring traditional holiday songs arranged for a large ensemble of tubas, baritones, euphoniums and sousaphones. Any musician who plays those instruments is invited to perform in TubaChristmas by making a $10 donation to benefit the Harvey Phillips Foundation. The same weekend, the ECU Chamber Singers, University Chorale and Concert Choir will present Sounds of the Season at 7:30 p.m. Dec. 2 at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 401 E. Fourth St., Greenville.
