Tran named director of undergraduate research at ECU

East Carolina University’s Division of Research, Economic Development and Engagement has named Dr. Tuan Tran director of the Office of Undergraduate Research. Tran officially takes over the role this summer.

Tran began his career at ECU in 2005 as an assistant professor in the Department of Psychology where he initiated his research program in the behavioral neuroscience lab. In 2007, he became the director of the multidisciplinary studies program in neuroscience.

Tran was promoted to associate professor in 2011. At that time, he also began his service as associate chair of psychology and as a member of the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee.

In the role of director of undergraduate research, Tran will work to further strengthen and expand the program by helping secure external and internal funding sources, developing new models for ECU’s Course-based Undergraduate Research Experience (CUREs), and continuing to assess experiences and outcomes.

Dr. Mary Farwell, vice chancellor for research compliance and director of undergraduate research since 2008, said, “Dr. Tran has long valued the important impact that undergraduate research experience provides students toward their personal and career growth. … More than 70 undergraduates have been mentored in his research lab, many of whom have launched careers in biomedical science, medicine and the social sciences.”

Tran said of the new appointment, “Along with my team, I look forward to helping empower undergraduate students in gaining research experience, develop critical thinking and technical skills, and hone their professional development that will prepare them for graduate school or careers related to their discipline of study.”

Undergraduate research allows students to investigate potential career paths and learn techniques that aren’t found in a traditional classroom setting.
