Christine Chan
Being an EC Scholar is a family tradition for Christine Chan. When she attends East Carolina University this fall, she will be the third Chan sibling to enter the EC Scholars program.
“I felt a connection to the school and the community, and I heard amazing things from my two sisters about the Honors College,” she said. “I know I will have many resources for success while at ECU, including research opportunities and excellent faculty support.”
Chan is excited to join the EC Scholars, the most prestigious undergraduate award program offered at ECU. The four-year merit scholarship recognizes outstanding academic performance, commitment to community engagement and strong leadership skills. Recipients receive an Honors College scholarship and a stipend for study abroad for a total value of nearly $64,000.
“Being an EC Scholar means being surrounded by high-achieving individuals and being pushed every day to be my best self,” she said. “I’m excited to join the EC Scholars family and make positive impacts on both ECU and the Greenville community.”
Chan has seen her two older sisters take advantage of a wealth of opportunities through the EC Scholars program and the Honors College. Her oldest sister, Victoria, graduates this spring with degrees in public health and psychology, while Elizabeth is finishing her second year at ECU and is majoring in biology and Hispanic studies.
“I know I will have many resources for success while here at ECU, including research opportunities and excellent faculty support,” she said.
After completing an undergraduate degree in biology, Chan wants to attend medical school to become a pathologist. Her dream is to help physicians diagnose their patients and create treatment plans.
The Holly Springs native is looking forward to getting involved with research and shadowing. She also hopes to join a few intramural sports teams and certified as an EMT.
“I am eager to uphold ECU’s motto, Servire, and serve my university and the Greenville community,” Chan said. “I am excited to engage in the diverse student body and support social justice with my cohorts.”
Before starting classes, she plans to spend time with her parents, Stephen and Catherine Chan, and her sisters. One of her goals this summer is to visit a few national parks. Her interest in the outdoors has influenced where she would like to study abroad.
“I would love to study abroad in Australia because of its bio- and ethno-diversity,” she said.
When she’s not involved in schoolwork or extracurriculars, Chan loves to run, lift weights, hike and play the piano and guitar.
“I am eager to uphold ECU’s motto, Servire, and serve my university and the Greenville community.”
