Aphasia workshop set for Feb. 7
GREENVILLE, N.C. — Strategies to improve communication with people with aphasia will be the focus of a Feb. 7 workshop at East Carolina University.
Aphasia is difficulty or loss in communication often caused by a stroke or brain injury.
“Learning to Speak Aphasia: Family/Friends Module” will be presented by guest speaker Maura Silverman of the Triangle Aphasia Project Unlimited in Raleigh. Silverman will provide strategies for family members and friends to improve communication exchanges which can help with short and long-term recovery.
The free workshop is for health care professionals, patients, family members and anyone who may interact with someone with aphasia. It will be held 2-4 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 7, in Room 1305 in the ECU College of Allied Health Sciences in the Health Sciences Building on West Fifth Street in Greenville. The event is sponsored by the ECU Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders, which also hosts an aphasia support group in Greenville. Upcoming meetings will be held 5-6 p.m. on Jan. 20, Feb. 3, Feb. 17, March 3, March 17, March 31 and April 14 in Room 4415 in the ECU College of Allied Health Sciences.
